STRIDE’s working Board of Directors consists of individuals with diverse professional skills, backgrounds and personal interests. Board meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm.
Dr. Karen Impson
President – Participation Coordinator
Dr. Impson has resided in Alaska for the last 14 years, and is the owner and sole pediatrician with Adventures in Pediatrics in Wasilla for the last 9 years. STRIDE is especially close to Karen’s heart – her son, Cameron, has autism and is starting his 4th year as a rider at STRIDE.
Vice President – Volunteer Coordinator
Debbie always had a love for horses and started riding them when she was very young. Debbie joined Stride over 10 years ago as a volunteer. For her, working with the program is rewarding by seeing the joy and sense of accomplishment the riders receive. Over the last decade, Debbie has been privileged to watch the program grow and expand into what it is today.
Treasurer & Donations
Sterling has spent the majority of his life in Palmer, Alaska. He is the grandson of hard working Matanuska dairy farmers and the son of parents who gave him an appreciation for hard work and this beautiful place we all call “home”. Although the Grover cows were sold long ago, Sterling has kept close ties to the family’s Palmer farm while watching his own four children enjoy “farm-life” and graduate from the same local schools he attended.
It is not a coincidence that his best friend and wife, Cheryl, is a “dairy farmer’s daughter” from Green Bay, Wisconsin. Together as a family, the Grovers enjoy any activity that takes them “into” Alaska, whether on horseback, kayaks or something with a little extra “horse-power”.
After college and adventures on Whidbey Island near Seattle, Sterling returned to Palmer and has found his love professionally in radiology sales and marketing. He currently represents the radiologists of Imaging Associates of Providence with locations in Palmer, Wasilla and Anchorage. He feels privileged to volunteer and assist great programs like STRIDE that do so much for so many.
Secretary – Volunteer Coordinator
Jessie works for the State of Alaska , Section of Women’s, Children’s and Family Heath, and support the Newborn Metabolic Screening program, the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention program and the Oral Health program. Jessie has been with STRIDE for over 10 years and has volunteered in a myriad of positions, culminating in her appointment to the Board as Secretary and Volunteer Coordinator. Jessie loves seeing the riders and side-walkers interact with the horses during the sessions, and how the return riders progress through the years. The program has grown by leaps and bounds during Jessie’s time with the organization, and she hopes that it continues to do so in the future.
Director at Large – Events Coordinator
Originally from the province of Ontario, Marcia has called Alaska home for the past seventeen years. As an educator and an life-long horse enthusiast, she is excited to work with STRIDE and combine these two passions. The connection with a horse is a powerful and special bond and Marcia is looking forward to helping others achieve. When at home, she loves spending time with her family and their Spanish Mustangs.
Together, this board is actively working to make Kathy’s dream of a therapeutic riding center that operates year round, and serves hundreds of disabled members of our community, come to fruition.
